What is stem cell rejuvenation/microneedling?

Stem cell rejuvenation/microneedling is one of the most popular options for non-surgical skin rejuvenation. Microneedling uses a handheld pen-like device with several tiny needles in the tip. The pen is moved over the skin, allowing the needling to penetrate to a specific depth below the surface and create microchannels that are effectively invisible to the naked eye. Your own stem cells can then be introduced through these microchannels to help generate new and younger looking skin.

The penetration by the needles causes a process involving coagulation and tightening of existing collagen fibers to smooth aging skin and stimulates the skin’s natural healing process to increase overall collagen production (which improves strength and shape of the skin). Over time, as new collagen is produced and makes its way to the surface of your skin, the benefits of the treatment begin to appear, including:

  • Dark spot reduction

  • An overall refreshed, rejuvenated appearance

What kind of anesthesia is used during microneedling?

A numbing cream will be applied to your face and allowed to set in before beginning the procedure.

How much does microneedling cost?

It is difficult to provide pricing before a patient has had a consultation with Dr. Liu. The cost of a procedure can vary depending on what a patient needs, what the procedure will entail, and how many treatments are required. More importantly, many patients come to Dr. Liu believing that they need a certain procedure, only to find out during the consultation that a different procedure will provide a better outcome.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes – 1 hour from start to finish.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments depends on the quality of your skin and your treatment goals. Typically, we recommend 4 to 6 treatments spaced around a month apart.

Does microneedling scar?

The needles used are so small that they do not leave a visible scar. Microneedling is safe to use in people of all skin types without increased risk of changes in skin color.

What you should expect after the procedure

While your skin is likely to appear flushed or slightly red (a good indicator that the healing process has begin), you will be able to immediately return to normal activity. Any post-treatment redness should subside after a few days. After completing the treatment regimen that you have discussed with Dr. Liu, you will begin to fully enjoy your smoother, softer, more radiant skin.
